The 80's - the 62 Falcon becomes my first car
In the summer of 1987, my Dad asked me if I would be interested in the 62. The car had become a permanent fixture in the garage since 1979-1980. I remember the somewhat apprehensive tone in his voice when he asked me if I would be interested in it. If not, he was just going to get rid of it. It really sounded as if he was hopeful that I would be interested in it so it would stay around and stay in the family. I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that is belonged to his Mother and that it was the last real tangible thing of hers left.
I don't know why or how some youngsters become attached to something like a car when they are growing up, yet still many years from being able to drive. Maybe it's something like a security blanket - something that you come to know and depend on always having around. Maybe it's the fun time a child spends riding in a car and seeing the world through the car's glass. Or maybe they grow up watching their Fathers work on the car and marvel at Dad's ability to "make it go again". I think those were some of the main reasons for me in the decision to take an interest in the car. Even as an adult, it would be a way for me to always experience those days and remember the Father and Son bond. And for me, it was the last real thing (other than memories) left over my childhood in this ever-changing world.
